"Almost completely generative and it's probably one of the best/most original/involving things i've heard in recent memory... really been blowing me away"
SCPT, recorded in the summer of 2006 at the New Hexittuaq Studio, is a four track EP of architectural acousmatic music, written and produced by Dominic Thurgood.
"Each of the four compositions are based upon mathematical processes that when set in motion produce a stream of musical events similar to those found in fractal systems. One event will trigger another to indicate that a change to a sound should follow, which will trigger another event, and so forth. Rather than produce new layers that may have no bearing on previous material, these events serve to change what already exists; the number of lines within each composition remain static throughout the piece.
One might assume that music based upon such limited mathematical systems would be cold and unemotive to the human ear. This could not be further from the truth. The music develops organically and is never static. The amplitude and timbre of each layer consistently changes, as does its position within the stereo field. Additionally, and as often can be found in my work, each of the compositions incorporate field recordsing that serve not only to augment the organic nature of the piece, but to document a personally significant time and place."
